What does the word "3D artist" mean? Someone who paints on a 3D paper? An artist with three D letters? Hell no. The term "3D artist" now refers to the digital age. Every 3D artist today has a PC in front of them instead of the classic pencil and paper we were used to. That’s the difference: the creativity is now projected on a screen, but the imagination and conceptualization process are still there.
What Does a 3D Artist Do?
Now I will answer a question: What does a 3D artist do?
EVERYTHING! That’s what a 3D artist would really answer as soon as they hear the question. I think it’s funny but, at the same time, frustrating because it’s true. We do what is supposed to be, most of the time, the job of multiple people. We do the modeling of a character, the texturing, and we are also expected to have rigging skills.
The Journey to Becoming a 3D Artist
And to be hired? Making your CV is not enough. You need... an interactive webpage? No, more than that. A short film that’s already been selected in more than 20 different festivals nationally, being selected internationally in Egypt, and winning prizes in Sweden? No, more than that. More than a human life experience working on successful projects? Yes! And by successful, I mean projects whose audience is all over the world and also some extra planets in our galaxy.
So, considering we need all that to become a 3D artist, we are supposed to have a lot of potential, right? Maybe "3D" has another meaning and it refers to the fact that we work in 3 dimensions in real life; because although we need to become Superman to get a job, once we are in, we have so much work that we are always in different dimensions at the same time, doing infinite project work.
The Evolving Role of a 3D Artist
Jokes aside, these days the figure of a 3D artist has evolved. Someone who knows about 3D is probably a digital nomad, someone capable of plenty of things, not only for the animation and videogame industries. Someone who has become a 3D artist can also work in different areas which are nothing like the industries I mentioned. A 3D artist can work in:
Medical visualization
Architectural visualization
Webpages
Video editing
Content Creation
Engineering
And so on.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
And now with Artificial Intelligence... there are two options here: If before we needed a project that succeeded outside our planet, now we need a project that goes outside our Galaxy, or we can use AI for our projects and call ourselves "The 3D Ultramans".
Conclusion: The Future of 3D Artistry
The future of 3D artistry is bright. As technology continues to evolve, so do the opportunities for 3D artists. We are at the forefront of innovation, blending creativity with technology to create stunning visuals that captivate audiences.
In this ever-changing landscape, staying adaptable is key. Embracing new tools and techniques will not only enhance our skills but also open doors to new possibilities.
So, whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting, remember that the world of 3D artistry is vast. There’s always something new to learn and explore.

Let’s continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in 3D art. The sky is not the limit; it’s just the beginning!
